Mayer Hawthorne – Impressions EP

Mayer Hawthorne – “Fantasy Girl”

Mayer Hawthorne – “Mr Blue Sky”

I’m not the kind of girl who likes R&B at all, but last week I stumbled across Mayer Hawthorne’s cover EP “Impressions” and it has been on repeat over since. Hawthorne’s signature soulful voice re-imagines six tracks from the upbeat “Mr. Blue Sky” (something that doesn’t exist in the Bay Area as of late) to my favorite – Jon Brion’s “Little Person.”

Head over to Stones Throw for the download as well as descriptions from the crooner himself about every track.

The Weeknd — House of Balloons

Apparently I missed out on the blogospheric storm that The Weeknd{{1}} caused a few months ago, but as is usually the case, some of their tracks trickled down into my iTunes through my automated musical zeitgeist. Hooray for robots!

Anyway, The Weeknd are an R&B duo from Toronto, who pairs contemporary R&B{{2}} male crooning with some dope ass (also contemporary) beats. As with many artists du jour these days, many of the lyrics are recycled and I didn’t really hear anything that stood out—It was really the slightly spacey, slightly downtempo/lo-fi production that kept my head bobbin. I’m a sucker for tracks that use that trunk rattlin’ bass sparingly & at just the right moments to accentuate, as heard in “The Party & The After Party”. Combine with the just right samples, and we have ourselves a winner!

All in all, another (over?)hyped artist that stands tall on some dope ass production, but with that said, it’s dope nonetheless, and definitely worth a listen. I look forward to hearing more soon!

Klaxons – Landmarks of Lunacy EP

London-based Klaxons may have released their second album Surfing the Void a few short months ago, but as a gift to their fans, the band that makes you feel like you’re on a constant acid trip dropped the Landmarks of Lunacy EP on Christmas for the free.

Broken Bells – “Meyrin Fields”

“Meyrin Fields,” the b-side from Broken Bells’ single release of “Ghost Inside” is clearly the better song between the two, and you can get your copy on Amazon UK.

La Melodia — Vibing High

Shout out to Mixed kids!

Soulful Female MC backed by smooth beats. AKA: Right up my alley.
From Another EP

San Francisco’s Roach Gigz & Lil’ 4 Tay (Rappin 4-tay’s son), otherwise known as B.I.G. (Bitch I Go), team up to release From Another EP. Not for all, but definitely worth a listen.

While You Were Sleeping* … New Elvis Perkins in Dearland!

*clever, huh

The first time I heard Elvis Perkins I was working the opening shift at Starbucks (yep, at 4:30am), and I fell in love. His “While You were Sleeping” came over the loud speakers, and halfway through my manager changed the song because she couldn’t handle the operatic voices over trumpets that starting blaring five minutes in – while still at 4:30 in the morning.

But I was hooked. I hunted down, and became obsessed with, his first album Ash Wednesday, the haunting tribute to his deceased parents, which documented amongst other things, his mother’s tragic death while a passenger on the ill-fated American Airlines Flight 11, which crashed into the World Trade Center’s twin towers. Standouts besides WYWS include the title track “Ash Wednesday” and “All the Night Without Love.”
