So I been working the graveyard shift recently… And even tho the whole “stay up till sun up” thing isn’t new to me at all (quite the night owl this one), I never did it while
working. It’s cool tho. One of the perks of graveyard (besides the time-and-a-half) is that everyone’s hella chill, and I get complete control of the music. So even though I have to keep it work-safe (at least most of the time!), I make sure that I keep the beats bumpin’ and heads (not) nodding (off to sleep).

Jonathan Jeremiah – Heart Of Stone (Penguin Prison Remix)
[via Big Stereo]
That 6/8 Timing with the Harpsichord synth helps to shake my neurons awake as I start the shift, screaming: “Don’t die yet, we’ve got work to do!” Techno remixes aren’t usually my thing, so it’s not my favorite of songs, but I don’t sleep on it (rimshot).

Jónsi – Boy Lilikoi
[via Aurgasm]
Sigor Ros’ frontman has a solo album out. “Boy Lilikoi” makes me wanna get up, get out & get some inspiration on! (Kinda makes me wanna go out and buy a cd too)! It’s kinda like if the upbeat sound fx laden Herbert was crossed with a fucking fantastic vocalist.

With a crazy-ass album cover like this, you can't go wrong
Galactic – Heart of Steel (f/Irma Thomas)
[via
3hive]
One of these days, I gotta make my way over to the south & do a state by state tour. I can’t deny that I got a little bit of twang myself , and can’t help but feel that I’d feel right at home where the spit is a bit dirtier, the drinking is a bit heavier, and a good meal always comes with a pitcher of iced tea. And let’s not forget the gumbo. Man… seafood stew??? Where spicier == better??? HU-WHAT?!?!? Anyway, Galactic seems to share a lot with that beloved dish of mine, namely: a lotta different influences (soul, funk, rock, folk, kumbia etc etc), a dash of spice, some goopy goopster (yummy echoing synthful voices) and a whole lotta soul. Check it out: just like any good, but weird food, can’t knock it till you try it!
Kovas – Go That Route
I dunno what kinda percussion this would be categorized under the
Music Genome Project, but I’d call it (inappropriately) , “Jungle Bass”. AKA The kinda shit I’d wanna hear in the club rather than last season’s radio hit. It’s even got a fuckin’ catchy hook: Take heed DJ’s out there. Whatever it is, you can’t go wrong callin ‘em
Ghetto Beats.

BTNH Singles will always have a place in my music collecting heart
Bone Thugs ‘N Harmony – 1st of Tha Month
C’mon. We’re workin’. Why? TO GET PAID, obviously. I don’t care if this ain’t exactly work-safe, but who cares? It’s all about something everyone on the grind, anywhere can relate to. I actually had some older WASP gentleman come up to me and say “I’m not against rap. I’m not against rappers. But I am against those thugs! I don’t understand half of what they’re saying, and what I do understand, I don’t really like. But I do like the chorus, so I’ll allow it.” So whatever your hustle is, cash your checks & come up!
Weldon Irving – Morning Sunrise
Jay Z – Dear Summer
Weldon Irvine’s classic day-starter ender. It’s a little slow, just enough to take the edge off for the drive home. The sunrise: what every graveyarder loves (and hates). And, Just Blaze…What more can I say?
Here’s to the sunrise.
Here’s 3 more I WISH I could play:

Yeah. Sleepy Fuckin' D, in case you didn't know.

Sleepy D – Blap
SergDun over @ So Many Shrimp calls out Jerk music’s current form for what it really is: Trickle-down Bay shit. . But that’s beside the point. The main attraction is Young L’s beat on “Blap”, fronted by Sleepy D, which got me feelin like Quagmire on Viagra.
Now I don’t know enough about the scenes to say anything bout the whole turf v.jerk issue, but I gotta admit that the its the grit & grind of turf that appeals to me. I dunno. Sometimes jerk shit seems too… Hollywood. Please feel free to prove me wrong though.

You dont see a lotta purple in the rap game outside of LA (or swishers)
Danny Brown – New Era
Daymn man. This shit is raw. Beats by Nick Speed is perfect with Detroit Danny’s straight up rugged delivery & flow. But I feel ‘em bout the ‘ballcaps though. Though I ain’t bout to “rock that shit any climate any weather”, summer is bout to hit the 707 hard , so imma see if I can rock a fitted cap instead of a beanie..aha
Major Lazer – Summer Mix 2010 (tracklist)
[via Mad Decent]
This club mix starts off a little too pop dancehall-y for me with “Keep It Goin’ Louder” , (Shout out to #1 Nina Sky fan Marí!), but it starts pickin up after. Besides, dancehall wasn’t made to sound good, it’s for grindin’ on the dancefloor!
