Finally, a mixtape from Weezy.

I dunno bout you, but I dropped Wayne like it was hot when the superstardom started gettin’ to him. With Tha Carter IV on the backburner, it seems Lil’ Wayne dropped this tape to keep his name buzzin’ on the interstreets.
As with his previous mixtapes, instrumental selection & production is on point: Gucci Gucci‘s melody was practically written for Weezy, and in the the 5th track, he kicks Marvin & Drake out the room so he can get down with “Dana”, harkening back to Mrs. Officer.

So while Sorry 4 The Wait, might not be a “Dedication” or a definitive answer to a “Drought”, as an atonement for 3 years of “whatevah rap”, consider this apology accepted.

The Weeknd - High For This (NastyNasty Edit)

Apparently I missed out on the blogospheric storm that The Weeknd{{1}} caused a few months ago, but as is usually the case, some of their tracks trickled down into my iTunes through my automated musical zeitgeist. Hooray for robots!

Anyway, The Weeknd are an R&B duo from Toronto, who pairs contemporary R&B{{2}} male crooning with some dope ass (also contemporary) beats. As with many artists du jour these days, many of the lyrics are recycled and I didn’t really hear anything that stood out—It was really the slightly spacey, slightly downtempo/lo-fi production that kept my head bobbin. I’m a sucker for tracks that use that trunk rattlin’ bass sparingly & at just the right moments to accentuate, as heard in “The Party & The After Party”. Combine with the just right samples, and we have ourselves a winner!

All in all, another (over?)hyped artist that stands tall on some dope ass production, but with that said, it’s dope nonetheless, and definitely worth a listen. I look forward to hearing more soon!

When I first heard bout a “new A-1 mixtape you are definitely gonna like”, my first thought was “that one crazy (but kinda hodgepodge) group from that ‘The Element of Surprise’ track? wtf???” {{1}} Needless to say, After School Special is from a different guy entirely.

[[1]]They were pretty… ridiculous, to say the least. But then again, what wasn’t back then?[[1]]

A mixed kid from the Mission, A-1’s been pretty prolific since his 2009 debut with a bunch of mixtapes in 2010. But his latest sports an overall theme that especially appealed to me: Saturday Morning TV. Produced by WooStaar and Sac Masta, After School Special is one of my favorite mixtapes of 2010, from beats to flow. Hit the jump to hear some of the tracks.

In one of the only songs not named after the show, A-1 uses the theme as the basis of a classic “rapper stay hungry” song, to great effect.

A-1—Charizard

Every weekday after school I’d rewind the VHS I used to record the anime I missed (I dunno why they put these shows on _before_ school was out), and the first thing I’d hear would be this nameless guy putting his all into a song about conspicuous consumption in cartoon form. Yeah, you know it: Pokémon baby.

I admit, I watched the show for it’s first season, and come to think of it, one of the main reasons was just so I could sing along to it’s hyper epic theme song. But it wasn’t just the epic singing, the instrumentals were fucking crazy; Synth guitars & drums never reached such grand heights. “Catchin’ ‘em all” was certainly was a daunting feat, even to this 8th grader (wtf there’s ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY ONE), and when I finally completed my pokédex, I truly did feel like “THE VEERRY BEESST” {{2}} [[2]]Before shit got outta hand when Nintendo got smart and kept rereleasing the same game with another 100 POS you had to get. I wisely said “fuck that”.[[2]].

A-1 relates the majesty of Reading Rainbows, with the magic that occurs when you put one in the air with your boo.

A-1—Reading Rainbow

I never really cared for Sesame Street. Theme song & the muppets were aight, but I already knew how to count and read, so it just felt like a long winded review. I fucked with some Reading Rainbow, though.

I was all up in books as a kid, so it drew me in. But the best part? A fucking BLACK GUY was hosting the show. LeVar Burton is the Dora the Explorer of my time. And what 80’s child wasn’t all mistrustful of their peer’s book recommendations cuz of the show? Not to mention that the theme song was on another level. Hearing it made reading seem all magical and adventurous and shit.{{3}} [[3]]Newsflash: It is.[[3]] Moreso than even the pokémon song (or at the time, the TMNT song), I could just feel this shit in my bones, ya know?

Stayin’ true to the forumula, Mr. Traore uses the theme to tell a time-honored “party player” story, but this time with an octogenarian twist.

A-1—Golden Girls

Even now, Live action shit (read: not a cartoon) doesn’t really appeal to me, probly because I can’t personally relate to a bunch of white people dealing with white people {{4}} [[4]]It’s better now, but minorities are still underrepresented so hard[[4]] problems.

As such, I can’t say that I ever really watched Golden Girls. But I do remember the theme. It was my cue to change to channel 3 and turn on the Nintendo.

My boo is a different story though, and is practically best friends with those cranky old ladies. As such, I, too, am now quite familiar with Dorothy, Rose , Sophia & Blanche as well, with the added bonus of being able to sing the theme song by heart. Dammit TV, you win again!

DJ Mensa - Seasons Change

The past few days I’ve had this silky smooth mixtape on heavy rotation. Nothin’ I could say could one-up what the man has to say for himself, so here it is:

It’s that time of year again. You feel that crisp brisk air circulate. You start favouring your greys and browns over your whites, and layering up just makes more sense. You begin to feel more introspective. The feeling of staying close to your friends intensifies. And the prospect of posting up wilding out at a party isn’t as alluring as that of just doing you, possibly with a book or some wine, or nothing at all.

Seasons change.

…I let songs breathe, as they’re all deserved to be heard and the vibe is deserved to be felt. Some synths. Some Lo-Fi. A bunch of recognizable names. A couple unknowns. 33 tracks. 81 minutes. In the words of Stretch Armstrong, this mix is “chonky.”
