The mix starts off with a high energy, leading off with the Marching Drum beat from Ima Boss. BEATFACE keeps it rolling & funky, while Small Black’s Moon Killer spaces out a little (as the title would suggest). After coming down from the trip, Villa Rosa reassures us with their feel-good, soul-sampling, Leader of the Pack. And at the end of our musical journey, Lana Del Ray sobers it up with a muted drone of a performance in Video Games.

Been diggin TOKiMONSTA’s sounds since I found about her via XLR8R. Its nice & chill, with a lotta trip-inducing space echo, but she manages to put in enough funky bass to keep my attention rapt, even when I’m at my dopiest & drowsy. While I really prefer her original works, TOKiMONSTA’s remix of Télépopmusik’s “Breathe” is cool too, adding some trippy sound level work to further add to the catchy synthpop hook we all loved in the early aught’s. You can check out more of Jennifer Lee’s music on her sound cloud.

As anyone who knows me can tell you, I loves me my Street Fighter.

But it’s not just the button mashing & pummeling of one’s opponent into the ground{{1}} [[1]]With subsequent shit talking, of course[[1]] that drew me in: the music & sfx that accompanies the World Warriors is fuckin’ timeless—After all, Guile’s theme goes with everything. {{2}}

And I’m not alone in holding the Street Fighter series to a high acoustic bar: as the MCs from the “Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis” era grow older, they’ve been incorporating their own nostalgia of Fighting in the Street into their own beats and rhymes.

To me, It’s not a game, it’s a way of life—”Yoga Flame!”, “SHORYUKEN!” & many other SF SFX are in my daily vocabulary, helping me express emotions and feelings that mere adjectives & metaphors can’t even touch. {{3}} So when times get tough, when it comes down to the line, all imma hear in my head is:

Best Coast – Boyfriend

I didn’t pick up on last year’s lolcatsy new artist, Best Coast.1 Boyfriend is a lulling trance, about young love, featuring a sound that I can only describe as Surfergaze2.

Maybe its the newfound sunshine in the Bay Area, but this light, poppy tune caught my ear despite my initial misgivings. I then tried listening to their single, “Crazy For You”, but Imma hafta pass on that thank you very much. Hopefully they stick around long enough to develop their sound a bit more!

Man, you come right outta comic book!

Fortilive f/Skyzoo – Jim Kelly

When I kick it at the key, Netflix on demand is always hype on the 50,000 inch entertainment system. Recently I’ve been hearin a lotta old film samples, so I decided to do some digital crate diving, and turned up with Black Dynamite & Black Belt Jones.

Blaxploitation movies are perfect for background entertainment for any kickback, givin ya plenty of conversation topics with all the pimpin, stylin, and general kick ass shit goin on. Not to mention that campiness that is unique to 70’s fare—like that laugh by Pops in Black Belt. Brotha’s goin over a leetle bit over the top.

With Jim Kelly, Fortilive—!llmind, Mushmouf & Slo-Mo— pays homage to one of Black America’s first movie stars. Not to mention one of the best lines ever:

“Goon: Who the fuck hit me!?”

“Jones: Batman muthafucka!” *POW!*

Bear Witnez! – Snow (Raining Cocaine)

Something about EC rappers and the white powder man. Not sayin that the WC don’t fuck with the white girl, but over on the Beast Coast they glamorize the hell outta runnin the slalom game. I guess if there’s snow all around you half the time, I’d be thinkin about lush mounds powder all the time too. 3

Kendrick Lamar f/Gucci Mane – Vanity Slave Part 2

YA Perfect beat & track to bring in Gucci, who—despite his questionable lifestyle choices—knows how to blow up some other fool’s track. In the case of Vanity Slave though, Mane lays low with only a couple stale lines, allowing the Lamar’s ego rhymes to shine through. 4

So while Kendrick’s low-key sound may not be what you’re used to hearing from Compton5, he’s gonna be in Oakland at The New Parish, so check em out.

Beach House – 10 Mile Stereo

Nothing new going on here, But, as I felt with “Boyfriend”, good harmonics & girly crooning always go together well, even if the girl is a boy.

Throughout the song, the synth’s piercing echos move lazily through a room. It isn’t till the end when the muted drums & bass are steady, but muted. start clashing towards a climax. Sure it’s a Tried & True (& Tired) formula, but at least unlike Best Coast, they don’t got that gimmicky sound.

I Got 5 On It: United Kingdom of Sound

Tvyks f/C.Monts – Mitte Riddim

Ya’ll ever see trainspotting? It’s one of my favorite British/Drug movies, largely because of the awesome music, particularly one track that I mentioned a few weeks back. It’s the frantic energy of that track that really captured Renton and his crew’s crazy, drug-addled lifestyle.

Mitte Riddim, reminds me a lot of that Underworld track, and evokes a similar sensation within myself. They both share a hyper BPM, with the sounds of electrotrash wafting throughout, spacing out the sound a bit. But what really gets me is the swaying feeling of the 2-step, which, to my untrained ears, epitomizes a particularly UK/EU sound, one that has spread far beyond the realm of Techno/ Electronica, touching upon every genre & scene in Britain’s music landscape.1

British Rap always trips me out. That “Propper Patois” accent is just too murch and always takes me for a loop, with me tryna concentrate real hard to make out wtf they’re saying. I could see why that’d be a turn off for some, but it’s hella fascinates me, something I find myself recognizing when nodding my head to acts like The Gorillaz & Herbaliser.

Poor Homie's rollin' so hard he thinks he's a kid again…

That’s the quintessential “Techno Music” sound in our clique. Whenever something’s a little too techno, a little too futuristic, or even sometimes a little too European, you’ll hear the (quite accurate IMHO) imitation of the bass & high hat comin’ from these lips{{1}} [[1]]Commonly accompanied by Air-Glowstick twirling[[1]]. While I don’t listen to a lot of the stereotypical “Techno”/rave music, I do have an appreciation for the genre. Here are 5 of my favorites that hit hard & fast, even if they aren’t all technically on the EuroTrash tip. The last one though, is a timeless classic and essential study into the epicness of the early 2000′s. Uh-huh, you know what it is.
