I Got Five On It: Summer’s Eve

Courtesy of Dixon Wong

Damn it’s the end of August already?

NorCal’s late-ass summer has been really screwin’ with my senses! I haven’t even posted up a good Summertington Playlist! Ah well. Even though it’s a little too late for the upbeat feel-good-cuz-I’m-FREE-ness of somethin’ like the Fresh Prince’s Summertime, so I’ll kick the tempo down a notch with some independent grooves.

H.I.S.D. (Hueston Independent Spit District) f/K.O. – Summer So Good

I gotta start it off with a summer jam. A beat based on steady slow drums with a touch of the high hat, Summer So Good is some high caliber cruisin’ music. When you’re drivin’ with the windows (or the top) down feelin’ the cool breeze & the hot sun, you need a track like this to give you those good vibrations; one with a hook that you can’t help but repeat: Summer SO GOOD.

Dylan Gilbert – Isabella

Remember those 90′s from-a-movie Alt-Rock singles? C’moooon… you know you were caught up in them too!(1). Maybe it’s just my pedigree, but this track sure sounds like I’m bout to be awash with some epic guitars & be "kissed by a rose" OR SOMETHING. Just wait. For Twilight 4 or something, this’ll be the track that plays during the trailer. And I will cry as yet another dope as song is used to pimp some crappy shit I don’t care about. Fucking Major Label soul suckers.

Little Boots – Stuck on Repeat

It’s like this.

I start gridin’ on some shit that just needs to get done. I put on a song.

It starts of with a beat that conjures up images of the "I Love Lucy" factory scenes: It keeps goin & don’t stop!

And just like the show, I can’t stop workin, and I can’t stop listening, even though the vocals don’t come in till bout 2 minutes in, if only for a few seconds — then it’s back to work. A few minutes later, back to those same distant, echoing vocals, trying to "break free" from the monotony.

Ironically, It’s only after repeating how many times she’s tried to break the monotony, does the song break the mold for a few moments, only to get stuck repeatin the same shit over again.

Okay – Compass

Pretty much an instrumental track that builds upon and breaks free from the repetition found in the previous track. The slurred & distorted vocals, along with the overall melancholy droll of the instrumental leads me to take a step back and review myself: my life, my goals, my last fuckin’ 30 minutes.

What can I say; Even though it’s not one of those tracks that will stay with me for the rest of my life— it speaks to my here and now. Take it or leave it; It works for me.

Obi Best – Swedish Boy

Swedish Boy has got that hauntingly beautiful vibe to it, but Obi’s Best seems even more manufactured than those of, say, Psapp’s Galia Durant.

Though the "toytronica" sound is there, there are no random off-key notes or misguided melodies, no vulnerabilty exposed that didn’t seem deliberate or planned. The feel good start of the bridge that appears around 1:30 kinda reinforces this lack of depth. Nonetheless, I really love the feel of the song, and find the vocalist’s distance oddly comforting.

Maybe it’s just “first listened” bias, but when it comes to the “existential overly orchestrated, passive-melancholy angst” genre of music, Obi is not the Best, but merely a runner-up.

Slum Village – Dope Man

From their Villa Manifesto, Dope Man‘s got that staple “Dilla head-nod” beat backing, with lyrics that put you in the mind of your friendly neighborhood drug dealer.

Damn. It’s kinda crazy how I gotta use the past tense when speaking about many of the musicians that I grew up with—Biggie & Tupac, Goodie Mobb, Gang Starr, Rage, Smashing Pumpkins, Bone Thugs ‘N Harmony… (2) I could go on and on. And sadly, Slum Village is another group to add to that list. It was good while it lasted though.

____

1. Goo Goo Dolls’ Iris, anyone?
2. Don’t bother correcting me. I listened to Un1ty or whatever & it’s 80% garbage, 15% “wtf who thought this was a good idea”, 5% “eh, it’s a Bone song”

I Got Five On It

It finally felt like summer this week.

Although I haven’t had the funds and opportunity to sail the seven seas, I have been fortunate to live and be exposed to a spectrum of neighborhoods throughout California. I’ve always been curious of areas out of my city limits, lets be real, Cali has alot to offer. The one thing I love, regardless of where I find myself, is that there always seems to be an underground culture. I guess the Status Quo simply doesn’t suffice alot of us.

It makes sense now,  because I’ve always been uneasy with labels and checking boxes. If anything, this exactly has driven me to break stereotypes and maximize my threshold of knowledge & culture. I guess being born in the US and having parents who immigrated from Mexico, as common as the first generation struggle may sound,  I’ve never fully accepted myself as originating from one culture. A goal for this year is to explore more areas outside of the state, unfortunately the furthest east I’ve been is Arizona. With friends embarking on new journeys outside of Killa Kali, its time I get better acquainted with the unknown.

Cee-lo – “Reset”

Cookin Soul ft. Curren$y – “Come with me”

Freddie Gibbs – “Born 2 Roll”

Young Gully – “Nite Shift”

DaVinci – “Mash On Em”

I Got Five On It: DownTempo

Yuko Kondo's rendition of last weekend

This past weekend the Clique & Friends™ trekked over to the Northern Cali’s esteemed Redwoods to get some of that quality time with Mother Nature. And cot damn did I get reacquainted with all she has to offer. Along with the greenest of greens, the serene peace of the woods, coupled with chillaxin by the river mellowed me the fuck out.

Even though I’m a little tired from the excursion, mentally, I’m refreshed and tearin’ up this week’s grind. So with this batch, I’ve hand picked some of my more low-key, down tempo tracks. The tracks kinda picked themselves, in that the overall mood of the 5 tunes match that of our weekend getaway. These things happen. (1)

I gotta say it though. If there was anything wrong about this weekend it’s one thing:

Not enough chips.

Digable Planets – Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)
Bone Thugs-N-Harmony – Weed Song
Lumininius – I Believe In You
Camp Lo – Sparkle
Outkast – Spottieottie Til Infinity (Locsmif Mix)

I Got Five On It: Something Unexpected

Sunset offa the Suisun Bay

I dunno bout you but, something about the Summer sun makes me loosen up and open up my musical tastes a little bit. Perhaps it’s a natural reflex to the repetitive droning of this year’s summer singles coming from every single radio station. Whatever the case, I find myself humming the tunes to shit that I never woulda been caught dead listening to a few months prior.

With this musical journey, I’ll introduce you to a few songs that snuck up on me, an all-time favorite song of mine, and a remix of it from an artist that I never imagined I would ever listen to. Ever.

YA Dope Album Cover

Sunglasses – Stand Fast

If the seagulls that squawk in the beginning don’t tip you off, this song’s gonna go sky high.

Stand Fast is a summer-tinged hipster soundscape that I can’t help but smile to. From the “all together now” hand clap, which makes you wanna join in on whatever shit they’re smokin’, to the surfer/stoner-brah drawl(1) on their lyrical delivery, (“Don’t dwe~~~~~ll!)” throughout the whole song, Sunglasses stays keepin it cacophonous.

The amalgamation of all the sounds invokes the crazy & colorful hyper-mess on the album cover, toeing the border between gaudy and “crazy enough to work”. In any other season, Stand Fast probably would have annoyed the shit outta me. Hit or miss, ya gotta love art students man. OR hate them.

Dawn Landes – Young Folks

You’ve heard the Kanye version. Hell you might have even heard the original Peter, Bjorn & John version(2) (Check the video, it’s tight, in the way only airline tutorial influenced ids can be). But to me, this is the way the tune is meant to be played!

Dawn chooses to replace the aloofness of the original version’s characteristic whistle with some good ol’ Americana fiddle strings, giving the whole song way more heart & soul. And the play between the distance of the sole female voice & the pollyannaish chorus of male voices rounds out the depth of the song.

I really never listened to too much “Country” music, but one of these days I’ll hafta travel down that dreaded path, in search for gems such as this. I’ve always had a spot in my heart for some of that bluesy-grassy-honky-tonky shit.

Erykah Badu – Agitation

What a Day…

This has been my one go-to tracks for when I’m in a funk & just need to push the reset button. Even though normally I hate these small neo-soul skits, this one really got to me.

The Chorus break right in the middle is what it’s all about; For better or for worse, Erykah doesn’t allow you to settle in with this track, it just builds & builds, then all of a sudden, just stops, like those bursts of adrenaline when inspiration hits ya smack dab on the face.

I dunno wtf she’s talkin’ bout after that, but when she ends with a “Thank You”, it reminds me that my own shit ain’t too bad, & that there is indeed hella much to be thankful for.

Radiohead – Kid A

Kid A has to be one of my favorite Radiohead songs ever. I’ll never forget the fucking chills that ran down my spine when I heard it live so many moons ago. It starts off sounding like a UFO came to touch down upon our Terra to play some kinda looming music box for us, along with some heartbeat bass drum.

When the UFO reveals it’s passengers, you hear some robotic alien whatsit speaking some crazy accented Engrish. WTF!?!? (3) It’s no secret that Kid A (and Radiohead in general) is not quite the most accessible music in the world.

Hell, it took music critics almost 10 years to classify it as the paradigm-shifting classic that it is. That is why anyone who does a cover of their tracks, and pulls it off deserves a head nod in my book. Which leads me to…

Indeed.

His White Privilege is a Wonderland! - Jay Smooth

John Mayer – Kid A (Radiohead Cover)

…THIS GUY. I never really cared for John Mayer. At first, I didn’t really pay attention to him, even back in ’02 when you couldn’t escape this guy and his damned Wonderland. But then he started saying some stupid shit. Repeatedly. His words turned my subtle annoyance into a not-so-subtle disdain. But then I found this glorious cover.

Despite using only an acoustic guitar, Mayer nonetheless manages to capture the ominous, yet welcoming tone of Yorke & Greenwood’s full arrangement of glockenspiels, noise & steady bass. But perhaps what is most surprising(4), is the depth of his voice. Though the jackass finds himself struggling at times to keep up with the weird-ass computer voice of Yorke, he not only holds his own, but calmly stakes his own claim & distinguishes himself from Yorke’s own vocal variations.

So I guess, all in all, racist rants aside (oh P.I.W.), I’ll give some props to the guy. As an artist. When it comes to anything else though, he should just STFU. (5).

____

1. you San Diego types know the sort.
2.
3. I remember my first year roommate swearing that instead of “I swept on a little white lie”, Yorke was saying “Let’s smoke some marijuana”. Who am I to disagree?
4. at least to me, someone who refused to listen to anything that came out of his mouth
5.  And leave it to Jimmy Rebel & Uncle Rukus (No Relation). (NSFW, or For Anything, really)

I Got Five On It: What Can I Say…

…I have a wide definition of “Good Music”.

Kick-Ass Theatre

VS.

3 Lines in the Trees

But on the real, I gotta admit that I don’t wake up every day to some steady mobb shit kickin’ in doors & wavin 4×4′s like our 1st contender. (1) No, no, some days I kicks it with the Challenger and pump up the eccentricity up a notch. With that said, imma stay eclectic with my 5 On It. After, all, this is Summer in Cali!

Doves is on some jet li shit

Birdman ft. Trick Trick – Stuntin While Shinin

Classic Birdman. Like 3804398 of his other songs, Baby devotes this one to expensive whips, and the fabolous people who drive them (/Robin Leach). There really isn’t anything special to this track that hasn’t been done better and blingier elsewhere, but nonetheless I find myself sayin’

“B-Bald Eagles When We Land!”

…ALL the time: Fuckin’ Black-American Vernacular is too dope, too ridiculous. Goon Sqwad member Trick Trick brings that gritty, Detroit “Big Figga” voice to the track, grounding Birdman’s ridiculous rhymes & hooks. Top it off with that classic Roland synth, and you’ve got another bumpin’—if somewhat uninspired—Cash Money track.

Florence and The Machine – You’ve Got the Love (The xx Remix)

Harps and shallow voices throughout the track, with a 90′s Era House Beat (2) ] behind it. Gotta love the 90′s. While it’s not my favorite of this selection, it’s instrumental nature makes for really good background music. And yes, it is a remix of a cover of an 80′s dance song, so understandably, a little bit of the original’s intensity got lost along the way.

So while I won’t believe the internet hype that seems to have been surround both The xx & Florence and The Machine just yet, I can still see some potential from the “Female lead with Rotating Band” genre, yet.(3)

The Living Sisters – Double Knots

Acapella groups don’t get a lotta play these days. Call me old school, but I love the format, when it’s done right (4).With Double Knots, the Living Sisters layer their voices spectacularly, singing about a summer love, alluding to that feeling in your stomach when the first sparks of a romance start to flare. The guitar played throughout the song & highlighted during the bridge shares the sister’s playfulness and pulls it all together. All in all, it’s just so apple pie & saccharine that I can’t help but get all up in double knots jes listenin’ to it

Slow Club – I Was Unconscious, It was a Dream

Slow Club plays starts the song off with a nice, ukulele(?) influenced acoustic duet, full of lovestrung Crooning & Wailing.(5) Eventually—as with all hipstery songs—the subject turns to alcohol.

Between slurred denials & talk bout “Bailey’s & Royalty” and “getting blind drunk” (Irish Creme & Crown Royal Perhaps?), things get a bit more little muddled; Dropping the innocent ukulele, the duo does away with their playful call-and-response replacing it with a musical rendition of Craigslist’s infamous “Missed Connections” section.

It is exactly this glorious burst of angst+self-importance that I love and hate about this indie music. I mean, in what other genre would you see a descrition of the artist like this:

“hailed as “the next White Stripes” upon the release of their debut album, Slow Club folded elements of folk, twee, and ‘60s pop into their music blah blah blah

Whatever, big label hype machine, allmusic. UGGH BODY YOSELF.

Ceu – Bubuia

Moving on…Something about artists with 3-letter names really appeals to me, and not just because 3 is my favorite number. (6) CéU is one of these mystical triforce artists, coming at us from São Paulo.

Even though I have no idea what she’s saying, Bubuia oozes with soul and sensuality, and most of all, swing. I imagine smoky dance clubs that contrast the favela funk style of high-paced sweat & grind, with a scene that upholds the banner of chillaxin: with more of a swerve in it’s step, and laden with playful smiles and coy looks. Which leads me to this:

Brazil’s crazy-broad culture of music & dance is one of my top reasons why I want to be at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio. We got six years to plan: Who’s with me?

____

1. I’ll save that shit for a Monday
2. It seems like just about every Dance song in the 90′s had a similar breakbeat, & that Drum&Bass-like sound effect
3. See Gargage, Portishead, The Cardigans, etc
4. The Family Guy spoofs of the barbershop quintet are hilarities!
Cue music and comedically hyper-extended misogyny:

5. For some reason it reminds me of “The Oath”
6. Sia, Air, M.I.A, E-40, just to name a few
