The mix starts off with a high energy, leading off with the Marching Drum beat from Ima Boss. BEATFACE keeps it rolling & funky, while Small Black’s Moon Killer spaces out a little (as the title would suggest). After coming down from the trip, Villa Rosa reassures us with their feel-good, soul-sampling, Leader of the Pack. And at the end of our musical journey, Lana Del Ray sobers it up with a muted drone of a performance in Video Games.

My homeboy telling me about the phrase “Altermodern” the other day. For all you artsy types, it’s basically “popomo”{{1}} [[1]]Post Post Modern[[1]]. Sounds kinda iffy, especially because of the “Alter” prefix. And why is “Alter” so lame? Listen dis:

Back in the 90′s, the whole “rock & roll” genre became known as “Alternative”. But alternative to what? You couldn’t turn on the radio without hitting some station that claimed to be “Your home for Alternative Rock!” What happened to just plain old Rock?

But to get back to the original subject, I don’t really quite buy the concept of Altermodern, at least as described by it’s main proponent.{{2}} [[2]]Click the pic to watch a vid of him tryin to be like Clarissa & explain it all[[2]] Then again, the concepts of Modernism and Postmodernism are pretty vague & confusing themselves, so who the fuck knows. Academia & Conceptual artists man… fucking loons the whole lot of em!{{3}}

[[3]]There are other, semi-interchangeable terms for the concept—hypermodern & supermodern—but these sound even more like they’re straight from the 90′s than altermodern! (where my shades at with the neon earpieces?)

Then again, I guess they’re all better than postmodern 2.0. Perhaps things really were better in the 90′s…

One of the things I missed most while living in Sunny San Diego was the rain: It just don’t happen there. And on those rare occasions that it did, the locals would freak out as if The End Times had arrived. {{1}} [[1]]WTF people, even the Beach Boys liked rain! [[1]]

Not only is rain refreshing, it plain sounds cool. And while much has been written on the pitter-patter of rain on the rooftop, my favorite rainsong is invariably tied to my highschool experience:

The rhythm of the wipers going back & forth.
The hum of an engine taking me far away from class & school.
The contemplative silence of some friends.
—And of course—
Some down tempo songs on the stereo.
