I never really got into Gucci. I mean, from name alone, I just lumped ‘em with all the other gimmicky rap-in-3rd-person fools ridin’ the bling wave and left it at that. And even though he’s ripe offa hella mixtapes and fixin’ to blow this year, I still just went “EH.” after The State Vs.‘

But leave it to Diplo (yes, yes, M.I.A.’s ex, but he’s really a good producer/dj outside of worldtown) to get me to really listen to what Radric’s gotta say. Taking the best tracks from the BURR series of mixtapes, Diplo delivers the sonic atmosphere that Gucci’s rhymes were begging for.

That said, Gucci’s really steppin’ his game up. Like Weezy, he ain’t afraid to brand-drop (obviously) to fill up his bars. But while Weezy’s been gettin’ kinda lazy with his metaphors due to his popularity, Gucci stay hungry, stay confucius. Hopefully he don’t blow up though. With lines like “My watch so stupid icy I can’t even tell the time”, I wouldn’t put it past Mr. Davis to let fame get (even further) to his head.
