I Got Five On It

It finally felt like summer this week.

Although I haven’t had the funds and opportunity to sail the seven seas, I have been fortunate to live and be exposed to a spectrum of neighborhoods throughout California. I’ve always been curious of areas out of my city limits, lets be real, Cali has alot to offer. The one thing I love, regardless of where I find myself, is that there always seems to be an underground culture. I guess the Status Quo simply doesn’t suffice alot of us.

It makes sense now,  because I’ve always been uneasy with labels and checking boxes. If anything, this exactly has driven me to break stereotypes and maximize my threshold of knowledge & culture. I guess being born in the US and having parents who immigrated from Mexico, as common as the first generation struggle may sound,  I’ve never fully accepted myself as originating from one culture. A goal for this year is to explore more areas outside of the state, unfortunately the furthest east I’ve been is Arizona. With friends embarking on new journeys outside of Killa Kali, its time I get better acquainted with the unknown.

I Got Five On It [04.02.10]

December 31, 2010 - March 30, 2010

This week we lost a great man. Many might know him as the thin haired Edward James Olmos who taught Calkuuloose in the 1988 film Stand & Deliver. Men like these don’t come by very often. His impact on inner city education was revolutionary.  He fought for tougher standards and accountability for students and educators.  His biography is impressive and reinstills the lesson that Ganas (desire) pushes people to overcome society’s toughest obstacles. Rest In Peace Señor Escalante.
