Did you know MTV's new logo (2010) no longer says Music Television?

Like I said before, I only listen to CDs in the car. Fussin’ around in the car, gettin’ pissed at all the crappy songs and stupid commercials just ain’t worth it no more, thanks to Clear Channel owning most of Cali Radio. As such, as a young adult, I quickly learned to distrust the radio, and turn to music videos for keeping up with all the top-of-the-pops shit. MTV, VH1, and California Music Channel to be specific. Yeah you got the commercials still, but at least you got to see some cool shit and good lookin’ people.

Then TRL & reality tv happened. Years go by. I didn’t have mtv2 or any of that other premium cable, so I stopped watching videos, found music blogs (shout out to Audio Galaxy), and never looked back…

Recentl tho, we switched over to ATT UVerse and even though we have MORE annoying-channels-that-nobody-watches-and-makes-channel-surfing-a-fucking-sea-voyage {{1}} [[1]]Telecom companies just ALL have to be evil huh?[[1]], it did come with a few perks.

Namely, the extra MTVs, VH1s and other music video stations. It’s been at least 5 years since I lived somewhere with a good music video station. Yeah, there’s the internet of course. But as a 90′s kid, I want my MTV Dammit! VH1 Soul, MTVU—and yes—MTV3 especially.

So now, I’ve got music videos as background noise, just like the good ol’ days. Here’s some of my recent favorites:

Corinne Bailey Rae – “I’d Do It All Again”

My Boo let me know wassup with Corinne Bailey Rae (“Trouble Sleeping”) awhile back, but I slept on it. Then one night while surfing around for some stuff for work, I stopped dead in the water when I heard it in the background. It’s so beautifully melancholy.

Alicia Keys – Like You’ll Never See Me Again

This one’s from awhile back, but I was kinda afraid of hearing an album of the “reinvented” Alicia Keys. Another sad r&b love song, by a beautiful, light-skinned woman? Do I sense a theme coming on?

Mayer Hawthorne – “I Wish It Would Rain”

Well, he’s light-skinned at least. Shannon peeped game awhile back with this shout out, and I mentioned the whole “color & appropriation” thing. His Cuomo-like attire just drives that issue further.{{2}}[[2]]See “Buddy Holly”, “Elvis”, “Appropriation of Rock and Roll”.[[2]] But white ain’t nothin but a color, and talent speaks for itself.

The Foreign Exchange – House of Cards

Time for something different. Well kinda. Still sad. Dope nonetheless, and a good “Driving with Purpose” song.

Timbaland f/Drake – Say Something

I ain’t so hot on the song,{{3}}[[3]]Or Drake in general.[[3]] but the 7 note riff that is repeated over and over in the beat got stuck in my head so hard, from hearing it in the background all the time. Seems to happen mostly when i’m fixin to start doing something. Huh. Timbaland Strikes Again.
